The Brief

The Challenge

The Brief

In recent years, the concept of a circular economy has spread around the world.
It proposes an economic system that preserves and maintains the value of products, materials, and resources as long as possible and minimizes the generation of waste, instead of the current linear economy.
What about the "technology" itself? It can be thought that technology was originally developed to enrich people's lives, such as solving people's "problems".
As for technology, is it possible to contribute to a circular economy by preserving and maintaining its value as long as possible or applying it to new fields and building a technology circulation? The problem that it is hard for people to communicate with others far away made us invent drums, beacons, radios, telephones, and the smartphones you use today. The "touch screen technology" currently used in smartphones and tablets was invented in the 1960s, but when Apple announced the iPhone equipped with only touch screen technology in 2007, it was an innovation that caused social change. In addition, it brought the heyday of smartphones.
The world today is in the midst of the 4th industrial revolution that began in the 2010s. The various social changes took place due to the development of ICT such as IoT, big data, and AI. Furthermore, the word “the 5th industrial revolution” has already appeared. (It has not been defined clearly yet.)
Would you like to think about the technology circulation together in anticipation of the 5th Industrial Revolution era, based on our technologies and resources?

The Challenge

In recent years, circular means an economic system that preserves and maintains the value of products, materials, and resources as long as possible and minimizes the generation of waste, instead of the ``straight line economy'' that uses goods in one way. The concept of the economy (circular economy) is spreading all over the world.
Technology is defined as a method or means of handling or processing things, a skill, technique, or art of doing things skillfully, or a method of making the results of scientific research useful in human life, or a skill of applying science to modify or process nature to make it useful (Wikipedia), but in essence, it may be said to be knowledge that has developed to enrich people's lives, such as solving their "problems. In short, it may be said that knowledge has developed to enrich people's lives, such as by solving their "problems. Technology has been created and nurtured by humans using their intellectual curiosity and other energies, and it is important to minimize the generation of waste of technology and the underlying fundamental value. Can't we contribute to the circular economy by preserving and maintaining this value for as long as possible, or by applying it to new fields, thereby creating a technology circulation?
For example, since it is difficult to communicate with people far away, we started communication from afar with taiko drums and beacons, followed by radios and telephones, and then connected with the smartphones that you are using today. And it is said that the "touch screen technology" currently used in smartphones and tablets appeared in the world in the 1960s, and it was used in commercial aircraft decks and computers incorporating other peripheral technologies. However, it did not go so far as to call it an innovation that would bring about social change. Meanwhile, when Apple announced the iPhone with only touch screen technology in 2007, it created the tide of the current smartphone boom. In addition, the diamond-patterned shape of the "diamond-cut cans" used in canned chu-hi and other products uses a technology called "PCCP Shell" (Pseudo-Cylindrical Concave Polyhedral Shell), which was born from space engineering research. Also, Japanese origami techniques such as "Miura folding" are used to carry satellite solar panels and antennas into space.
In the fourth industrial revolution that began in the 2010s, the development of ICT, such as IoT, big data, and AI, has brought about various social transformations, and the term fifth industrial revolution (yet to be clearly defined) is already emerging. In such a turbulent future, based on the technology, data, experience, knowledge, etc. cultivated in the history of 140 years since our foundation, we will go beyond the framework of the construction industry and look ahead to the era of the 5th industrial revolution. Would you like to think about the technology circulation together?
